Chery Automobile EV Strategy: iCAR, Super Hybrid, and Global Expansion

Chery Automobile has completely redesigned its approach to electric mobility. The company moved beyond simple compliance EVs. It now leads with aggressive technology deployment across multiple brands and markets. Recent sales data from the first quarter of 2025 shows Chery Automobile doubling its new energy vehicle deliveries compared to the same period last year. This growth did not happen by accident.

Chery Automobile Co restructured its entire product development cycle around two main pillars. One pillar is Chery New Energy, for battery-electric vehicles. The other pillar is the Chery Super Hybrid for plug-in hybrids.

Both systems share the same digital chassis architecture. This shared foundation allows Chery Automobile to quickly shift production volume between pure-EV and hybrid models based on regional demand.

Why Chery Automobile Matters in China’s EV Export Race

Chery Automobile matters because it has turned export capability into a strategic advantage at a time when China’s domestic auto market remains intensely competitive. In September 2025, Chery Group reported monthly sales of 280,469, NEV sales of 91,590, and overseas sales of 137,624. During the first three quarters of 2025, Chery exported 936,428 vehicles and sold 145,000 vehicles in Europe.

That export base gives Chery Automobile Co. a profile different from that of many Chinese EV players. Some companies built their reputations through pure-electric models in the domestic market.

Chery built from SUVs, global channels, dealer networks, and multi-brand positioning. This matters because many export markets still need plug-in hybrids, gasoline backup, service coverage, and practical pricing.

The company also entered a new phase in the capital markets in 2025. Reuters reported that Chery Automobile launched a Hong Kong IPO to raise up to HK$9.15 billion, with proceeds earmarked for new passenger vehicles, next-generation vehicle development, and international expansion.

Chery Super Hybrid Is The Bridge Technology

Chery Super Hybrid is central to Chery’s global EV strategy because many markets are not yet ready for pure-electric adoption at scale. Charging access, electricity costs, driving distances, and resale confidence vary widely by country. Plug-in hybrids give Chery a practical way to electrify its buyers without forcing them to rely solely on charging.

This is why plug-in hybrids sit at the center of Chery’s 2025 export story. Chery International said that in the first half of 2025, new energy sales rose sharply, with PHEV products gaining strong traction across Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The company also pointed to the TIGGO CSH series debut in Poland and Greece as part of its Europe localization push.

The Tiggo CSH lineup shows how Chery thinks about mainstream electrification. Rather than positioning every market around battery-electric vehicles, Chery uses hybrid SUVs to address real adoption barriers. For families, fleet buyers, and emerging-market customers, hybrid range and charging flexibility can matter more than maximum battery capacity.

This gives Chery Automobile a strong export playbook. It can sell Chery Tiggo SUVs with familiar size, cabin space, and fuel flexibility, then introduce more electric models as infrastructure improves. That sequence feels more realistic than a pure BEV push in regions with uneven charging coverage.

iCAR and iCAUR Target A Different EV Buyer

Chery iCAR gives the group a sharper electric identity. The brand speaks to buyers who want a boxier design, lifestyle positioning, and smarter electric features. Internationally, iCAR / iCAUR gives Chery a cleaner EV-facing name outside China. Reuters reported in March 2026 that Chery planned to launch the iCAUR V23 electric SUV brand in South Africa in May 2026.

That move matters because South Africa is not an easy EV market to enter. EV penetration remains low, yet Chinese automakers see room for growth through stronger pricing, dealer expansion, and hybrid-plus-electric portfolios. Chery’s iCAUR launch shows that the company wants EV brand awareness before full market maturity arrives.

The iCAR Lineup and Chery iCAR 03

The Chery iCAR 03 also fits the wider trend toward compact electric SUVs with a stronger personality. Chery iCAR 03 captures the consumer search layer around boxy electric SUVs. For strategy, it shows how Chery can build interest beyond conventional family SUVs.

Chery iCAR 03 features a wading depth of 600 millimeters and approach angles that rival those of dedicated off-roaders. The company sees this as a key advantage in emerging markets where road conditions vary widely.

Chery iCAR models are produced at the newly upgraded Wuhu plant. This facility uses 600 automated robots for body assembly. The plant can produce one Chery iCAR 03 every 90 seconds at peak operation. Current monthly output for the Chery iCAR range is 15,000 units.

Chery EQ7 and Mainstream Electric Offerings

Chery EQ7 represents the volume play in the Chery Automobile EV strategy. This midsize electric sedan competes directly with models from BYD and GAC. Chery EQ7 uses a 150 kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Rear Wheel Drive gives the car better handling balance than Front Wheel Drive competitors. The battery pack uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry for lower cost and longer cycle life.

Early 2025 sales figures for Chery EQ7 reached 22,000 units in China alone. Export versions now ship to Southeast Asia and Latin America. The trunk space measures 520 liters, larger than any direct competitor in its price class. Chery Automobile priced the Chery EQ7 starting at 149,800 RMB before subsidies. This aggressive pricing forces other automakers to reconsider their own EV pricing structures.

Fulwin Expands Chery’s Domestic New Energy Base

Chery Fulwin is the domestic new energy layer that helps Chery compete in China’s crowded NEV market. The official Fulwin site lists models across the A, T, and X series, including X3, X3 Plus, X3L, T8, T9, T10, and A8-related products.

Chery Fulwin models combine a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with two electric drive units. The system produces a combined power output of 240 kW. More important than peak power is the fuel consumption. Chery Super Hybrid technology achieves 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers when the battery is depleted.

The Chery Super Hybrid system uses a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Most competitors use a single-speed setup. The three-speed design keeps the engine in its most efficient operating range at highway speeds. The Chery Fulwin A9 sedan launched in February 2025 with this powertrain. The car covers 1,300 kilometers on a full tank and full charge. The electric-only range reaches 105 kilometers on the NEDC cycle.

Chery Automobile plans to equip all Chery Fulwin models with vehicle-to-load functionality. Owners can power appliances directly from the car battery. This feature proves popular in markets with unstable grid power.

Omoda And Jaecoo Carry Chery’s Global Identity

Omoda & Jaecoo are important because they give Chery a more export-friendly brand system. In many countries, buyers may not know 奇瑞汽车, but they can engage with Omoda as a youthful crossover brand and Jaecoo as a more rugged SUV brand.

Reuters reported in June 2025 that Chery launched hybrid versions of the Omoda C9 and Jaecoo J7 SUVs in South Africa. The Jaecoo J7 used a super-hybrid system, and the Omoda C9 offered a plug-in hybrid setup with a long total range.

This approach helps Chery Automobile enter emerging markets with products that fit local realities. In South Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, consumers may want advanced technology, but they still require clear warranty support, fuel flexibility, and accessible service networks.

The same logic appears in Iraq. Reuters reported in August 2025 that Chery partnered with Jameel Motors to launch Omoda and Jaecoo in Iraq, with an initial lineup that included petrol and plug-in hybrid models.

Europe Is The Hardest Test For Chery Automobile

Europe is a strategic test because the region demands safety, regulatory compliance, brand trust, and local service depth. Reuters reported in July 2025 that Chery planned to launch its Chery brand in Britain with two SUV models.

Chery is also pushing local production. Reuters reported in February 2026 that Chery planned to begin vehicle production in Spain in 2026 through a joint venture with Ebro at a former Nissan plant in Barcelona. The planned production included the Omoda 5 and, later, the Jaecoo 7 models.

That local production plan matters because Chinese EV exports face policy pressure in Europe. Local assembly gives Chery more flexibility on tariffs, logistics, and market perception. It also moves Chery closer to the customer, which becomes vital when a Chinese brand needs to prove reliability after the sale.

Reuters later reported that Chery was looking to expand European production through partnerships with other automakers. This shows a clear shift from simple export growth to deeper regional embedding.

Battery Supply and Charging Network Strategy

Chery Automobile signed a five-year battery supply agreement with CATL in January 2025. The deal covers 25 GWh of battery cells annually. Chery Super Hybrid models use a different cell chemistry than pure EVs. The hybrid cells prioritize power density for quick discharge. The EV cells prioritize energy density for maximum range.

Chery Automobile does not build its own public charging network. Instead, the company partnered with Shell to co-brand fast chargers at existing Shell stations. Over 3,000 locations in China now offer Chery Automobile optimized charging. The partnership extends to Europe and Southeast Asia. Chery Automobile owners receive discounted charging rates at these locations.

The company also developed a mobile charging robot for apartment dwellers. This robot navigates through parking garages to deliver a 10-kWh battery module. The user requests a charge through the Chery Automobile app. A human attendant does not operate the robot. The system works autonomously. Pilot programs run in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
